What is a Fever?

According to a local school district, a fever is anything over 99.8 degrees and grounds to send a child home from school. The child must then be fever free for 24 hours before returning to school. RJ has missed three days of school this week because of a 'fever' of 99.8 with no other symptoms. Mind you, this is a child who has a genetic condition that impacts the Hypothalamus (the part of the brain that controls temperature). It is documented that people with PWS have a hard time regulating their temperature both directions yet with no other symptoms we are being told that we have to follow district policy. I have been to the school's office twice this week, brought documentation to back up my statements and hope to hear from them regarding a reasonable comprimise this afternoon. Why does everything have to be so hard?

Hang in there. I know you have had a really tough week but it will get better. Once they understand that this is just the way he presents that should put an end to it (I hope).

Frustration! Can you get your doctor to call and provide info.

Next year (or demand an amendment meeting if it gets too bad) get it put into his IEP. Some sort of policy that makes sense for RJ. Although it is a pain to have to take it that far.
