Cross Country

Matthew is participating in cross country this fall. He will say he was forced to do it (which is pretty much true). We wanted him to try out an organized sport and felt like cross country may be a good fit. We were wrong. He really doesn’t like it. I’m very proud of him for continuing to try and sticking it out for the season. His first meet is Monday and they had pictures tonight. At least he looks cute in his uniform.

Good for him to give it a try, hopefully he samples others too at some point, it's a good way to stay in shape especially. Wrestling was probably my favorite, though I wasn't very good at it. I understand his hesitation though, sports are great if they're low on work and big on fun, but these days especially it seems you have to invest tons of time to become as elite as you can be at one or more of them to actually play much and enjoy the rewards, let alone have any chance at a scholarship or professional role, and that's an enormous investment of time. Meanwhile, every minute spent learning and practicing academic, technical, and strategic skills has no barrier to entry and is productive time well spent that gives a person a leg up heading into the real world and continues, in aggregate, to pay off for life. Not to say a person can't do both, of course, but there has to be time to do so too. Hope you guys have had a good start to the school year!
